As the birthplace of modern roller derby, Austin holds a special place in the sport’s history. The city supports two leagues, and thousands of fans attend their games each season. These women are regarded as some of the best in the sport, and consistently rank among the top teams in the world. What began as a small movement in Austin became a worldwide phenomenon in just a few short years.
In August 2013, Erin proposed a temporary exhibit about the history and culture of Austin roller derby to the Bullock Texas State History Museum. The Bullock accepted the proposal, and the exhibit is currently on view. As the guest curator, Erin researched and wrote the script, interviewed skaters, sourced artifacts and images, and liaisoned with the local roller derby community. “Roller Derby” opened on March 14, 2015, in the Bullock’s third floor rotunda gallery, and will run through August 9, 2015.
